Anyone can get cancer, but the risk increases with age, and most cases, approximately 77%, occur in adults 55 and older. Experts predict that about 1,437,180 new cancer cases will be diagnosed in the US in 2008. And, there are just so many types of cancer...colon, breast, lung, pancreatic, brain, melanoma of the skin, leukemia, lymphoma, uterine, ovarian, prostate...we could go on and on. It knows no boundaries. It killed 7.6 million people worldwide in 2007, a figure that is expected to rise to 17.5 million by 2050.
The costs are equally compelling. The National Institutes of Health estimate overall costs of cancer in 2007 were $219.2 billion. But, there is good news. Statistics show that cancer patients are living longer, with many beating the disease. Not only that, but surgery is less radical than in the past and chemotherapy is producing fewer side effects, some of which are treatable wth new medications. Yet, we have such a long way to go. It still ranks as one of the top two killers of Americans. Your help can make a difference!
