Imagine that your child is incapable of socially interacting and communicating with others…avoids eye contact and is non-responsive…and demonstrates repetitive movements, like rocking, twirling or even head banging. Today, one in every 150 children is affected with autism. That makes it more common than pediatric cancer, diabetes and AIDS combined.

By definition, autism is a neurobiological disorder, whose primary feature is impaired social interaction. It can range from mild to severe. It can appear as early as infancy and last throughout a lifetime. The other two key components are problems with verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive or obsessive behaviors. There is no cure and scientists are not even sure what causes it. It has been shown, however, that with early intervention and the right treatments and therapies, autistic children can improve with age and grow up to lead near normal lives. Your help can make a difference!

Board member, spokesperson, advocate and mother to a recovered child, actress Jenny McCarthy leads Generation Rescue, an international movement of scientists, physicians and parent-volunteers, researching the causes and treatments for autism and mentoring thousands of families in recovering their children from autism.
