Chances are, you know someone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. That’s because breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women (behind skin cancer) and the second leading cause of cancer death in women, surpassed only by lung cancer (source: American Cancer Society). One out of eight American women who live to be 80 years of age are projected to develop breast cancer in their lifetime. It is estimated that over 180,000 new invasive breast cancer cases were diagnosed in 2008 and that there are 2.5 million women living with breast cancer today.

A woman’s risk of breast cancer nearly doubles if she has a first-degree relative (mother, sister, daughter) who has been diagnosed with the disease. And, about 20-30% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have a family history. Since symptoms can vary widely and some women have no symptoms at all, monthly self-exams and annual mammograms (typically recommended for women 40 and over) are critically important. Regular screening can be the key to finding breast cancer early, when it’s most treatable.

We now know more than we used to about ways to reduce breast cancer risk. Exercising, quitting smoking, and maintaining a healthy weight are all important. Research advances have found new and better treatments. Still, much more research is needed before a cure for breast cancer is found. Your help can make a difference!
