Coal, as a source of electricity, is the dirtiest of all  greenhouse gas emitters and is generating catastrophic climate change and ecosystem destruction on a scale that will be impossible to reverse in the foreseeable future. Half of all greenhouse gas emissions from human activity come from burning coal. The science supporting this is abundant and clear.

We must have a moratorium on new coal plants and phase out existing ones within the next 20 years or risk increasingly dire consequences. Coal from mountaintop removal coal mining (MTR), the most devastating and destructive form of coal mining, provides only 7% of United States coal, less than the amount of coal that we export, and yet is allowed to continue under current  government policy and under EPA regulations. The vast MTR sites that now have destroyed over 2,000,000 acres of our nation's Appalachian forest — more than 12% — and buried over 2000 miles of streams and headwaters continue to grow.  Profits go to few and the problems are borne by many.

Let us turn the coalfields of Appalachia into windfields, a role for which they are perfect.  Let us replace dirty energy jobs with green renewable ones, a ration of 1:2  respectively. Let us take a stand together to end the destruction of these  mountains and the communities that depend upon them and let us do whatever it takes to close current coal-fired power plants and move forward into a greener future, together. Your help can make a difference.

Rainforest Action Network, dubbed “some of the most savvy environmental agitators in the business” by the Wall Street Journal, uses hard-hitting markets campaigns to align the policies of multinational corporations with widespread public support for environmental protection. We believe that logging ancient forests for copy paper or destroying an endangered ecosystem for a week’s worth of coal is not just destructive, but outdated and unnecessary. There is no such thing as clean coal. Just go see the mountains being destroyed in Appalachia for the evidence. The alternatives exist and we must put them into play before it is too late.
