UNAIDS, the joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS, estimates that, globally, approximately 30.8 million adults and 2 million children were living with HIV at the end of last year. During 2007, about 2.7 million people became infected with HIV and 2 million people died from AIDS worldwide. Staggering... Even with all the new therapies, which have enabled people to live longer with HIV, there has only been a slight decline in deaths since its peak in 2005.
Of those with HIV, approximately 95% live in developing countries. And, the infection rates continue to grow in these impoverished lands,
where lack of health care allows the virus to proliferate at rapid speed. There is still no cure for AIDS and it kills more people than all wars. There's so much to be done, from education to preventative supplies, to programs to increase medications, as well as health care services to turn the tide on this insidious disease. You can make a difference!
The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation seeks to prevent HIV infection and to eradicate pediatric AIDS through research, advocacy, and prevention and treatment programs.
