Here’s one more great reason to have an “I’m Tired of Hunger” bracelet and a new fun way of getting one…
Some of the country’s finest restaurants are coming together for the Help ♥ Haiti campaign, an initiative that kicks off this Valentine’s Day at TOUCH nightclub to benefit survivors of the earthquake in Haiti. The campaign’s New York Lead Sponsor is The Tour de France Restaurant Group, comprised of Nice Matin, Marseille, Café D’Alsace, Le Monde, Pigalle, Maison, France L’Express, the uptown and downtown branches of French Roast, as well as a growing list of participants.
From February 15th through the 28th, whenever a guest orders a meal at one of the participating restaurants while wearing an “I’m Tired of Hunger“ bracelet, the restaurant will donate $2.40, the cost of one day’s supply of Ready-to-Use Foods for an acutely malnourished child, to Action Against Hunger | ACF-International.
“I’m Tired of Hunger” bracelets will be distributed during the Help ♥ Haiti kick-off event at TOUCH nightclub on Valentine’s Day. Even if you don’t live in New York or can’t attend the event, you can still help by buying the bracelet online, here on the website. Maybe you have friends or relatives in New York?
Help ♥ Haiti campaign sponsors include TOUCH nightclub, Ultimat Vodka, Vitella’s Cucina, Captivate Network, and TimeOut New York, along with The Tour de France Restaurant Group.
Action Against Hunger mobilized an emergency response immediately following the earthquake in Haiti. The organization is delivering emergency services in nutrition, sanitation and hygiene and providing clean water for survivors in Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas. Action Against Hunger has assisted thousands of people left homeless and in dire need of life-sustaining supplies over the last three weeks.

European researchers have found that a lack in circulating vitamin D may be correlated to a greater risk of colorectal cancer. Their study showed that people in the top fifth of vitamin D levels had a 40 percent lower risk for this disease, although more research is needed to conclude that increase in this vitamin can effectively reduce the risk for this cancer.
If more research can support these findings, vitamin D may play a role in controlling cancer by modulating cell growth and death by reducing the development of blood vessels to support tumor tissue.

5,000 to 8,000 schools were affected by the earthquake in Haiti. In Port-Au-Prince, 90 to 97% of the schools were destroyed, as most of the schools were built with cement blocks to withstand hurricanes, not using anti-seismic systems in the case of an earthquake. The entire national school system — already among the poorest in the world — had been shut down, although schools in much of the country were not directly affected.
In attempt to restore some type of order to children’s lives, schools opened yesterday for the first time since the quake, even though it could be a month or longer before pupils in the quake zone resume their studies. Due to this reopening, many classrooms were fuller than usual because of children relocating.
Clinics run by Doctors without Borders report that the psychological impact of the disaster is becoming more apparent- especially in the symptoms of children, which could be helped by restoring a familiar type of order into the children’s lives and giving them something other than the devastation to think about.
The country is still in need of almost every form of aid- including food, clean water, cash, and even lightweight trucks.

In the bitter cold last Monday night, a man and woman picked apart a pyramid of clear trash bags, the discards of the H & M clothing store that reigns in blazing plate-glass glory on 34th Street, just east of Sixth Avenue in Manhattan. At the back entrance on 35th Street, awaiting trash haulers, were bags of garments that appear to have never been worn. And to make sure that they never would be worn or sold, someone had slashed most of them with box cutters or razors, a familiar sight outside H & M’s back door. The man and woman were there to salvage what had not been destroyed.
It is winter. A third of the city is poor. And unworn clothing is being destroyed nightly.
A few doors down on 35th Street, hundreds of garments tagged for sale in Wal-Mart - hoodies and T-shirts and pants - were discovered in trash bags the week before Christmas, apparently dumped by a contractor for Wal-Mart that has space on the block.
Each piece of clothing had holes punched through it by a machine.
They were found by Cynthia Magnus, who attends classes at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York on Fifth Avenue and noticed the piles of discarded clothing as she walked to the subway station in Herald Square. She was aghast at the waste, and dragged some of the bags home to Brooklyn, hoping that someone would be willing to take on the job of patching the clothes and making them wearable.
A Wal-Mart spokeswoman, Melissa Hill, said the company normally donates all its unworn goods to charities, and would have to investigate why the items found on 35th Street were discarded.

The popular botanical ginkgo biloba does not improve memory nor does it prevent cognitive decline in older people, according to the largest and longest scientific study ever undertaken to look at the supplement.
An extract derived from the ginkgo tree, ginkgo biloba has been touted since the 1970s by the supplement industry and others as an aid to improving memory, cognitive impairment, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Ginkgo extract has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for more than 500 years, according to the American Botanical Council.
The study finding is “disappointing news,” says Steven DeKosky, dean of the University of Virginia School of Medicine and the study’s senior author. The only positive thing the researchers found is that ginkgo appears to be safe, he says. Read more…

Just in time for New Year’s Eve, a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, reveals that champagne, like red wine, is good for your heart and blood circulation.
The study from the University of Reading finds that drinking champagne in moderation (two glasses a day) has a positive effect on the way blood vessels function reducing the risks of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart disease and stroke.
The beneficial factor in champagne comes from polyphenol, a plant chemical found in red and white grapes. When you drink champagne, polyphenols get absorbed in your blood stream.
Polyphenols slow down the removal of nitric oxide from the blood. High nitric oxide levels in the blood increase blood flow and can decrease blood pressure and blood clotting. Thus, it can possibly reduce the risks of suffering from heart disease and stroke.
I don’t think you need an excuse to break out the bubbly this holiday season. But, if you do, you can count it towards your New Year’s Resolution to stay healthy.
Cheers!
