We just love this idea and we hope it will inspire other states.

EL PASO - Specialized Texas license plates that call attention to child abuse became available Tuesday. Some proceeds from the plates will benefit the local chapter of the child welfare board.

The license plate reads “Stop child abuse” and depicts a multi-colored child’s handprint with a heart on the palm.

Wait to schedule breast exams can reach 4 months in New York

Monday, March 30th, 2009

10004868New York women must wait an average of a month for a mammogram - and up to four months in extreme cases, a new study shows. At Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn - the facility found to have the longest wait times - it can take as long as 16-1/2 weeks to schedule the cancer-screening test, according to a survey done by Rep. Anthony Weiner.

“The results are alarming,” said Weiner (D-Brooklyn, Queens), who is pressing to boost the Medicare reimbursement for mammograms in hopes of driving down the wait times.

In the Bronx, women can expect to wait nearly 5-1/2 weeks, according to the survey of 33 mammogram facilities citywide.

In Staten Island, the average lag time between calling for an appointment and getting a scan is just over five weeks.

In Brooklyn and Queens, it can take about four weeks. Read more…

Hyperbaric Autism Treatment Shows Promise

Monday, March 30th, 2009

hyperbaricAnother autism controversy… Some parents are trying hyperbaric chambers as a treatment for their autistic children. While still unproved as a remedy, there have been reports that this type of therapy, which boosts the amount of oxygen in the child’s brain, has improved the functioning of some autistic children and is not physically dangerous to them, although it can be dangerous to the parent’s financial health at $100 to $900 per treatment.

A small study looked at 56 children, ages 2 to 7, who had varying degrees of autism. Each received 40 one-hour treatments. Thirty of the children had the pressure in the chamber increased by 30 percent, while the 26 children in the control group had the pressure increased by only 3 percent. Results showed that 30 percent of the children who received the treatment reported “greatly increased functioning,” while 8 percent in the control group did.

Others in the field remain skeptical. Read more…

Type 2 Diabetes More Prevalent in Certain Ethnic Groups

Friday, March 27th, 2009

Recent research results show that type 2 diabetes occurs more in Native Hawaiians, Latinos, African Americans and Japanese Americans than in Caucasians, regardless of their weight.

While doctors said that diabetes is still very much tied to obesity, the statistics were part of a Multiethnic Cohort Study of Diet and Cancer, conducted by the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii in Honolulu. Of approximately 187,000 adults from five ethnic groups who participated, almost 12 percent reported that they had diabetes. The prevalence of diabetes was roughly 16 percent in Native Hawaiians and Latinos, 15 percent in African Americans and 10 percent in Japanese Americans. Only 6% were caucasians. The findings support a role for genetics in the development of type 2 diabetes. Read more…

Keep Those Animal Smile Pictures Coming!

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

casperfunnyyawnIt seems that our “Smile” slide show is bringing smiles to a whole lot of faces out there. We’re very excited to see it being passed around by so many of you to your friends, co-workers and relatives. And, it’s bringing a lot of attention to and orders for our “I’m Tired of Animal Cruelty” bracelets, raising money for Best Friends Animal Society.

What’s also very fun is that people are starting to submit their own “Smile” photos to us. Here’s a great one, submitted by Lucy from Lutz, Florida. This time, it’s not a dog or cat, but rather, Casper, the horse. What a smile on this guy! Lucy wants everyone to know that horses are suffering as much as dogs and cats, especially in this down economy. They’re being mistreated and abandoned, largely because they are more expensive to keep. Thanks, Lucy, for the wonderful photo, and drawing attention to yet another sad animal cruelty issue.

Courthouse Shoe Display Marks Incidents of Child Abuse

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

We just found this story to be very touching and had to share. We all know what a serious issue child abuse is & perhaps gestures such as this can create greater awareness around the country and world…

The Wayne County, North Carolina courthouse atrium next month will be adorned with hundreds of children’s shoes to draw attention to child abuse in the county and state.

Each of the 417 pairs of shoes will represent one of the 417 abused/neglected children in the county last year.

In addition, 50 to 60 black pairs of shoes will represent the number of child abuse deaths across North Carolina last year.

April is Child Abuse Month and commissioners last week were asked for permission to place the shoes in the courthouse and to support other events associated with the observance.

The displays are part of education and outreach activities for the month, said Stoney Blevins, program administrator, Wayne County Adult and Children’s Services.

Studies Cast Doubt on Prostate Cancer Screenings

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

The tests rarely save lives, researchers say, and treatment can cause more harm than the potential tumor.

Whether to screen men for prostate cancer has been a controversial topic for at least 20 years. Many clinicians have believed that finding a tumor early and cutting it out is the best possible way to treat prostate cancer, just as it is for most tumors.

Critics of the screening have argued that many prostate tumors grow so slowly that the patient is likely to die of other causes before the tumor becomes a threat. They contend that early treatment can cause more damage than leaving the tumor alone.

Now, two major and long-awaited studies show that screening men for prostate cancer provides little or no benefit in saving lives and can lead to painful, debilitating and expensive medical treatments without any obvious benefit. Read more…

Global Warming Ranks Last in Public Concern

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

global-warmingGlobal warming ranks dead last among U.S. voters’ priorities, according to a Pew Research Center Poll showing Americans are relatively unconcerned about global warming and are becoming less concerned each year. The Pew Research Center telephoned 1,503 American adults for the poll, whose results were released January 22. Respondents were presented with 20 issues and asked one by one whether they considered each issue a top priority.

Strengthening the economy ranked most important, with 85 percent of respondents saying it should be a top priority. Addressing global warming ranked dead last, with 30 percent assigning it a top priority.

Since 2007, when addressing global warming was added as one of the options in the organization’s annual poll, the perceived importance has declined each year. Addressing global warming was seen as a top priority by 38 percent of adults in 2007, 35 percent in 2008, and now 30 percent.
Analysts Not Surprised

Although global warming alarmists, including former Vice President Al Gore’s “WE” campaign, have spent vast amounts of public relations money on the issue, many analysts were unsurprised by the poll results.

“What struck me, apart from global warming ranking dead last, was that it was one of 20 concerns pre-selected for the poll by Pew,” said Jon Sanders, a policy analyst at the John Locke Foundation. “Would people have even thought to mention it were they not required to find a place to rank it?”

Lord Christopher Monckton, a prominent British global warming skeptic who served as a policy advisor to former U.K. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, was not at all surprised by the results. “Americans are not buying the global warming hype for one reason, above all: It is not true,” Monckton said.

“There was no climate crisis; there is no climate crisis; there will be no climate crisis,” Monckton added. “The U.N. says global temperatures will rise by 7 degrees F this century, yet since 1980 global temperatures have been rising at little more than a third of this rate, and since late 2001 temperatures have been falling at a rate of 3.5 degrees F per century.

“A growing band of determined scientists and researchers are exposing the lies being profitably peddled by the surprisingly small clique that drives the scare,” Monckton explained. “The truth always prevails in the end.”

Caring for the Poor

Cal Beisner, national spokesman for the Cornwall Alliance for the Stewardship of Creation, thinks Americans are right to be more concerned about the problems affecting the poor than about a speculated single-digit increase in the world’s temperature.

“Most Americans have a great deal more common sense than to think a minute change in atmospheric chemistry could cause enough temperature increase to justify spending scores of trillions of dollars over the next century to fight it,” Beisner said.

“There are much more pressing problems facing Americans and, especially, the world’s poor,” Beisner explained.
