Geriatric Neurologist & Author Discusses “Myths of Alzheimer’s”

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

alzheimers_framedDr. Peter Whitehouse, a geriatric neurologist and author of “The Myth of Alzheimer’s: What You Aren’t Being Told Told About Today’s Most Dreaded Diagnosis” says that Alzheimer’s disease is a 100-year-old myth that’s over the hill.

Whitehouse has replaced the term “Alzheimer’s disease” with “severe brain aging.” That distinction, he says, makes all the difference. He says we need to stop throwing money at searching for a cure to what he calls “age-associated cognitive challenges.” Instead of medication, the focus should be on preventing brain aging through simple strategies such as exercise, reading and eating right.

Hotelier Leona Helmsley’s Estate is NOT Going to the Dogs

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

helmsleyThe first $136 million from the hotelier Leona Helmsley’s disputed multibillion-dollar estate has been distributed, but the bulk went to medical centers instead of dogs. Only $1 million of the estate, valued at about $5 billion, was donated to the care of dogs, which Mrs. Helmsley had designated as her primary beneficiary.

“This is a trifling and embarrassingly small amount,” said Wayne Pacelle, president of the Humane Society of the United States. “Mrs. Helmsley’s wishes are clearly being subverted.”

After Mrs. Helmsley’s death in 2007, it was revealed that she had drafted a mission statement four years earlier listing two specific priorities for the distribution of her estate. The first was helping the poor, which she struck from the document a year later. The second was to provide for the care of dogs, although she added “and such other charitable activities as the trustees shall determine.”

In February, a Manhattan judge ruled that the trustees had sole discretion in disbursing her assets and that the entire estate did not have to go to the dogs.

Mrs. Helmsley, whose husband Harry was a real estate magnate, also left $12 million to her own Maltese, Trouble. The disclosure that Trouble was the largest named beneficiary in the will prompted death threats against the dog.

Another judge reduced Trouble’s trust fund to $2 million; the dog’s security costs the estate $100,000 a year. (The judge also negotiated a $6 million settlement with two of Mrs. Helmsley’s grandchildren who were explicitly left out of her will.) Read more…

Stem Cell Transplants Help Some Type 1 Diabetics Go Without Insulin

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

microscopeIn a small experimental study, type 1 diabetics who received stem cell transplants were able to forgo taking insulin for up to four years, according to new research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The study was conducted because an earlier study found that 15 patients with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes, who underwent stem cell transplants, were able to remain insulin free for an average of 19 months. The new study wanted to test the idea that those effects were simply the result of a “honeymoon period” following the transplant.

In the new study, 12 of 23 patients, ages 13 to 31, remained continuously free from insulin injections for an average of 31 months. Of those, one study participant was insulin free for more than four years, four were insulin free for at least three years, three went without insulin for at least two years, and four achieved this for at least one year. Eight other study participants experienced “transient” insulin independence, meaning they had to start taking insulin again at lower levels.

Richard K. Burt, an associate professor at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago and co-author of the study, emphasized that stem cell transplants are not without risk. Sterility is one concern, but the most serious risk is a potentially lethal infection, he said. Read more…

5th Grade Girl Sells I’m Tired of… Bracelets at School

Monday, April 27th, 2009

kimmyThis is one of those wonderful stories that I just had to share. I gave my friend’s daughter an “I’m Tired of Animal Cruelty” bracelet. She was crazy about it, wore it to school and started telling all her friends what our campaign was about. She then decided to sell the bracelets for us at her elementary school. I am so pleased to report that she actually sold 18 bracelets. This has now morphed into a new business venture she’s going to start, which involves walking and babysitting neighborhood dogs. She plans to donate half the money she makes to Best Friends Animal Society, our charity beneficiary for the animal cruelty bracelet. Way to go Kimmy!

Mary Tyler Moore’s New Book Talks about her Struggle with Diabetes

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

mary_tyler_mooreYou probably either know Mary Tyler Moore as Dick Van Dyke’s wife on the “Dick Van Dyke Show” or as Mary Richards, the spunky, independent single woman form the “Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Both are favorites of mine and she is a wonderful actress, who has also made some incredible movies, like “Ordinary People.”

But, what you may not know is that, around the time of the “Mary Tyler Moore Show,” the actress was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and now has lost most of her vision because of diabetes-related nerve damage. She is also a strong advocate for diabetes research and education and serves as the international chairwoman of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, a group she has worked with for years.

In her new book, “Growing Up Again: Lifes, Loves and Oh Yeah, Diabetes,” she offers a personal account of living with diabetes. Though she includes tips and advice from doctors, the book is more a memoir than a how-to for the newly diagnosed. She shares work anecdotes and family tales. The book also includes reflections from others with diabetes and Moore praises the young people she has met for their intelligence and commitment to managing their disease — something she says they do far better than she did in her early years. Miley Cyrus Receives Animal Rights Honor for Chicken Kindness

Monday, April 20th, 2009

miley_cyrusYes, you read that right. PETA2, the youth division of PETA, has honored Miley Cyrus for her kindness to chickens. Evidently, Miley adopted one of the birds that was featured in her new film, Hannah Montana: The Movie, and made sure the other chickens used in the film found good homes too. These actions earned her a Compassionate Citizen Award from PETA2.

A PETA spokeswoman said that she packed up a few of the birds and sent them home with her mother. Cyrus reportedly felt sorry for the chickens because they were sad to be working.

This isn’t the first time that Cyrus has stepped in to help animals. Last year, she and her dad, Billy Ray, found a lost dog in her neighborhood and stayed with the dog until he was reunited with his guardian.

PETA hopes that Miley’s work with animals will inspire her fans to be kind to animals too. She will receive a framed certificate and a card signed by PETA staffers.

Melatonin May Help Autistic Children Sleep

Friday, April 17th, 2009

sleeping_childA study, published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, suggests that melatonin may help children with autism or Fragile X syndrome sleep.

Study senior author Beth Goodlin-Jones of the M.I.N.D Institute at the University of California Davis Health System in Sacramento, said that sleep problems are reported in up to 89 percent of children with autism and 77 percent of children with Fragile X syndrome. She explained that sometimes children may take one to two hours to fall asleep and often disrupt the household during this time. Treatment with over-the-counter melatonin supplements might help alleviate some of the stress that parents of special-needs children experience. Read more…
