The Ugly Truth about Pit Bulls

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Warning: This video was sent to us by an anonymous source and is very graphic. It clearly demonstrates the risk level we face, when we consider a Pit Bull for a pet.

Sorry, but this all too common footage of Pit Bulls needs to be shown. You might also want to turn up the volume. Please share your thoughts afterward.

These are Difficult Times for Non Profits

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Here’s an example of the unfortunate fallout from these difficult economic times. This is the last thing we should allow to happen…

Planned layoffs are now under way at Heifer International, according to a company spokesman.

Heifer spokesperson Tina Hall confirmed that the first round of layoffs have begun and will continue on. Heifer announced earlier this year that layoffs were forthcoming and would be implemented by the end of June.

Hall said the layoffs would affect about 20 percent of Heifer’s U.S. work force of about 330 employees and that specifics concerning the Heifer locations affected by the layoffs would be released soon.

Based in Little Rock, Heifer is a nonprofit organization dedicated to eradicating world hunger and poverty.

In these difficult economic times, charities are struggling more than ever to make ends meet and continue to do their critically important work to rid the world of disease, hunger, discrimination, animal cruelty and address other important issues we face. We just don’t have the extra cash to write the nice checks. Our bracelet campaign has helped make a difference, because it allows thousands and thousands of people to make just a small purchase and together, make a big difference!

Nick Jonas Lobbies for Diabetes Research

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

nick_jonasThe youngest Jonas brother spent Tuesday lobbying Washington’s power brokers on behalf of diabetes research — starting with the big guy, President Barack Obama.

Clad in a white oxford shirt (no tie) and a gray blazer with the sleeves pushed up, Nick Jonas, 16, stopped by the White House for a photo with the president and children who are living with diabetes.

It was his second time at the White House this year. He and brothers Joe and Kevin hung out there with Obama’s daughters, Malia and Sasha, on the night of Obama’s inauguration.

After the White House, Jonas headed off to Capitol Hill for a private meeting at the office of Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J.

The teen idol and the senator made small talk about music while photographers snapped their pictures. Roughly a dozen Capitol Hill interns waited quietly across the hall from Lautenberg’s office for a glimpse of Jonas — no loud outbursts or attempts to sneak around security.

“I know some people can become star-struck and lose sight of what they’re here for, but if Nick Jonas makes juvenile diabetes a cause that people are more aware of, it’s worth it,” said Ashley Woolos, an American University student and intern in the office of Rep. Richard Neal, D-Mass. “A younger face might bring younger fans and the fact that juvenile diabetes is not just an older persons’ disease.”

Nick Jonas publicly revealed that he has Type 1 diabetes while performing at a Diabetes Research Institute fundraiser in 2007. He is scheduled to testify on Wednesday before a Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee hearing on federal funding for diabetes research. Other witnesses include boxer Sugar Ray Leonard and actress Mary Tyler Moore.

The Jonas Bothers created the Change for the Children Foundation, which donates money to charities benefiting children who are disadvantaged or ill. They released their fourth CD, “Lines, Vines, and Trying Times,” last week.

Cow Burps? A Major Contributor to Global Warming?

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

cowfaceOne contributor to global warming - bigger than coal mines, landfills and sewage treatment plants - is being left out of efforts by the Obama administration and House Democrats to limit greenhouse gas emissions.Cow burps.

Belching from the nation’s 170 million cattle, sheep and pigs produces about one-quarter of the methane released in the United States each year, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. That makes the hoofed critters the largest source of the heat-trapping gas.

In part because of an adept farm lobby campaign that equates government regulation with a cow tax, the gas from farm animals is exempt from legislation being considered by Congress to limit greenhouse gas emissions.

The EPA under President Barack Obama has said it has no plans to regulate the gas, even though the agency recently included methane among six greenhouse gases it thinks are endangering human health and welfare.

Global warming causing mass migration

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

We’re not sure you should pack up and move to the mountains, just yet, but we found this story published by UPI to be a good read.

Global warming will submerge island states, destroy farmland and force millions of people into migration by 2050, according to a report unveiled at climate negotiations in Bonn, Germany.

Worsening tropical storms, desert droughts and rising sea levels will displace 200 million people by 2050, according to estimates from the International Organization for Migration included in a report authored by the U.N. University, CARE International and Columbia University. Read more…

PETA Sends Obama Humane Fly Catcher

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

obama
PETA has a few words for President Obama: Brush, don’t kill.

After the President very publically swatted and then killed a fly during an interview with CNBC, the outspoken animal rights group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) said they wished Obama had served a better example.

“We support compassion for the even the smallest animals,” says Bruce Friedrich, VP for Policy at PETA. “We support giving insects the benefit of the doubt.”

Friedrich says PETA supports “brushing flies away rather than killing them” and was disappointed that the President had gone ahead and squashed the pesky fly.

This afternoon PETA sent a Katcha Bug, a device which traps bugs and allows their safe release back into nature to the White House.

PETA hopes the President will use the catcher but has no far not received communication back from the White House, although they did not ask for specific correspondence.

Friedrich admits that despite his fly-swatting ways, the President has been a champion for animal rights in the past. PETA claims to be pleased by Obama’s denouncement of factory farming, Canadian seal hunting andMichelle Obama’s stance against wearing fur.

Lost Dog is Returned to Owners Two Years After Going Missing

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Don’t you just love stories like this?

A stray dog found collapsed and bleeding on London’s streets has been reunited with her family twenty miles away, two years after she went missing.

A dog warden from Southwark council found Honey, a distinctive looking Saluki cross-breed, last month after a member of the public reported seeing her in Bermondsey. She was very weak with filthy, matted fur so she rushed her to The Blue Cross pet charity’s hospital in Victoria, which provides a 24-hour emergency service for injured pets.

Blue Cross vet Nigel Griffiths said: “When Honey arrived in the middle of the night she was severely dehydrated and could barely lift her head. We put her on a drip and made her comfortable then carried out some tests. She was suffering from severe gastroenteritis. Fortunately, after intensive treatment and special care she soon made a full recovery.”

Honey had been fitted with a microchip containing her owner’s contact details so The Blue Cross was able to contact them the next day. Nurses were amazed to find out that Honey had gone missing from her home in April 2007 after squeezing through a hole in the garden fence and had not been seen since. Owners Mr and Mrs Beckley suspect she may have been stolen.

Mrs Beckley said: “We were gobsmacked when we got the message from The Blue Cross, and we’re so grateful to them for bringing Honey back to us. We all loved Honey so much and were devastated when we couldn’t find her. We put up posters and called local vets and rescue centres then when we moved house we thought we might never see her again. Thank goodness we had her microchipped and kept the contact details up to date, just in case.”

Honey was reunited with her owners last week and appears to be recovering well from her ordeal.

Aaaahhhh… Another happy ending.

Depression Linked to Increased Risk for Alzheimer’s

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

depressed1People who have had depression may be more prone to Alzheimer’s disease, two studies suggest. Dutch researchers found Alzheimer’s was 2.5 times more likely in people with a history of depression. Similarly, US researchers, examining Catholic clergy, found those with signs of depression were more likely to go on to develop Alzheimer’s. The Dutch study appears in the journal Neurology and the US study in Archives of General Psychiatry.

The Dutch study was small - 486 people over an average of six years, with just 33 people developing Alzheimer’s. But it found that people who showed signs of depression before the age of 60 were four times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s. Lead researcher Dr Monique Breteler said: “We don’t know yet whether depression contributes to the development of Alzheimer’s disease, or whether another unknown factor causes both depression and dementia.”

The findings were echoed in a second study by Rush University in the US. The researchers followed more than 900 members of the Catholic clergy for up to 13 years during which time 190 developed Alzheimer’s. They found that those with more signs of depression at the start of the study were more likely to develop Alzheimer’s. Researcher Dr Robert Wilson said: “Depressive symptoms may be associated with distinctive changes in the brain that somehow reduce neural reserve, which is the brain’s ability to tolerate the pathology associated with Alzheimer’s disease.” Read more…

The Battle Against Discrimination is all Uphill

Friday, June 12th, 2009

The shooting Wednesday at the Holocaust Museum by a white supremacist reminds us once again that discrimination and hate on all levels is alive and well in our world. It is incomprehensible that there are human beings who could have such an unconscionable set of beliefs and then violently act on them, taking another human life or lives.

While perhaps we’ve seen improvements in some forms of discrimination, such as gender and racial over the past several years, it’s become quite apparent that when it comes to religion, ethnicity and sexual orientation, we’re still in the “stone age.”

We are committed to raising money to help Human Rights First fight against all forms of discrimination.
