Why was Daryl Hannah arrested in Coal River, West Virginia?

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

daryl_hannah_mtr

Why would we even care about Ms. Hannah being arrested and refer you to an article she wrote for The Huffington Post? The fact is, she’s a whole lot more than a great looking actress…

Daryl Hannah is an outspoken, gutsy activist who is willing to do a lot more than simply attach her face to a cause. She engages in the causes she believes in, like animal rights, saving our environment and many others and then fights for them.

Read about the lengths she (and others) are willing to go to stop mountain top removal (MTR). MTR is a devastatingly destructive form of mining and has already destroyed 2,000,000 acres in the Appalachian Mountains.

Coal companies have literally blown up over 500 mountain tops to access the coal seams and then dumped the refuse into the valleys below, killing over 3000 miles of headwater streams. The EPA just gave the go ahead for an additional 42 mountaintops to be blown off with another 6 permits pending.

By the way, if you look closely at Daryl’s wrist in the photo above taken in West Virginia, you’ll see she’s wearing the new “I’m Tired of Coal” bracelet. We introduced this bracelet to help support the efforts of our newest charity partners, the Rainforest Action Network (RAN) and The Power Project, both actively involved in halting MTR and finding alternative sources of energy to coal.

Toyota Unleashes Giant Solar-Powered Flowers On Unsuspecting Cities

Friday, July 24th, 2009

prius_flowers

In an effort to remind you that the new 2010 Prius was created from the loins of Mother Nature herself, Toyota is rolling out an unusual, but highly effective form of brand advertising: giant killer solar-powered flowers that can charge your laptop and give you free WiFi.

According to the company, these blood-thirsty high-tech Daisys represent the Prius theme of “Harmony between Man, Nature, and Machine.” Boston is the first to witness the invasion promotion followed soon by New York, Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

Concern Block Party at Paramount Studios Raises $1.3 Million for Cancer Research

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

block_party_1

What a spectacular night! The Back Lot of Paramount Studios was transformed into a “foodie” fest with tasting stations from 57 of LA’s best restaurants, caterers and beverage companies, including world famous “Pink’s Hotdogs, Lawry’s the Prime Rib and Bistro Gardens,” and the crowd was entertained by Billy Vera and the Beaters, not to mention the 70 plus table casino. More than 3,000 people attended the event and, in this economy, that means that Concern Foundation has a large and loyal following. And, why not? The event raised $1.3 million dollars, which will go to funding 48 cancer researchers nationwide.

The Concern Foundation was conceived in 1968 by a small group of friends in Beverly Hills to channel their grief over a friend’s breast cancer diagnosis. With 95% of net proceeds going directly to research, Concern has funded 554 researchers studying many forms of cancer, primarily in the areas of cancer genetics, cell biology, and immunology. Concern specifically funds researchers who lack financial support for their first major research project. Concern’s impact on the careers of young investigators is profound and helps to sustain the progress made in the cancer research community.

Way to go, Concern!

I’m Tired of… Flying!

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

There are so many things I’m Tired of…, a lot of them serious issues, like all of the important causes we support, but some of them are just annoying things that stick in my “craw” — like, take for example, the wonderful world of flying!

So, especially with summer travel upon us, I decided to dedicate my Huffington Post story for this week to exactly that and wrote a piece called, “I’m Tired of… Flying.”

flying_1As the article begins, “I’m tired of arriving at the airport two to three hours ahead of my flight. I’m tired of long grueling security lines. I’m tired of walking through scanners barefoot and beltless. I’m tired of paying for baggage, soft drinks and food… I’m tired of flying from beginning to end! What’s next… coin operated airplane bathrooms?”

I had so much fun writing it, that I might have to continue to write about more and more things we’re all tired of!

Any suggestions for me? Click here to read the story.

Doctor tries to personalize cancer treatment

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

There is no starched white lab coat for Dr. Laura Esserman. Instead, the tall and striking breast cancer researcher, surgeon and visionary favors colorful clothes, high heels and, on a recent day, metallic blue nail polish.

Before she operates, just as the general anesthetic is being administered, Esserman sings the patient’s requested song. A talented musician with a voice for opera, Esserman delivers songs as varied as “Don’t You Fret” from “Les Miserables” to the Sarah Palin rap from “Saturday Night Live.” Read more…

Matchmaker to the Dogs

Monday, July 20th, 2009

dogtime_logoHere’s a very cool website we discovered in our animal rights travels. Called Dogtime, it’s a great place for anything and everything to do with dogs — a search engine that shows you adoptable dogs and local pet businesses in your area and a virtual cornucopia of information, articles and tips on all things dogs. You can learn everything you need to know from the Dogtime experts about specific breeds, training techniques, including quizes to guage how you’re doing and pet insurance. There are special offers, videos, a forum and so much more. One of our favorite parts, though is the online matchmaking questionnaire that then matches you with your perfect type of dog.

We find this website to be very comprehensive with great information and services, not to mention that it’s well done, appealing and easy to navigate. And, we’re told they’ve got big plans for more great doggy info and services to come! Check them out at www.dogtime.com.
