Champagne Good for the Heart. A Toast to Your Health!

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

champagneJust in time for New Year’s Eve, a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, reveals that champagne, like red wine, is good for your heart and blood circulation.

The study from the University of Reading finds that drinking champagne in moderation (two glasses a day) has a positive effect on the way blood vessels function reducing the risks of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart disease and stroke.

The beneficial factor in champagne comes from polyphenol, a plant chemical found in red and white grapes. When you drink champagne, polyphenols get absorbed in your blood stream.

Polyphenols slow down the removal of nitric oxide from the blood. High nitric oxide levels in the blood increase blood flow and can decrease blood pressure and blood clotting. Thus, it can possibly reduce the risks of suffering from heart disease and stroke.

I don’t think you need an excuse to break out the bubbly this holiday season. But, if you do, you can count it towards your New Year’s Resolution to stay healthy.

Cheers!

Targeted Breast Cancer Drug Shrinks Tumors

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

breastcancer3A new targeted cancer drug has been shown to shrink tumors in women with metastatic breast cancer after an average of seven other drugs, including Herceptin, failed. The new drug, called T-DM1, combines Herceptin with a potent chemotherapy drug. It’s a Trojan horse approach, where Herceptin homes in on cancer cells and delivers the cancer-killing agent directly to its target.

Tumors shrank in one-third of women with metastatic breast cancer given T-DM1, says Ian Krop, MD, of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. In another 12%, tumors stopped growing for at least six months.

The women remained cancer-free for an average of seven months — results unheard of in patients this sick, he says.

All the women, who had breast tumors for an average of three years, had cancer that had metastasized, or spread to other parts of the body. They had been treated with an average of seven different therapies, including Herceptin, Tykerb, and Xeloda, and each had failed.

Could Solar Powered Cell Phones be in the Near Future?

Friday, December 18th, 2009

ecofone

Designer Liu Hsiang-Ling has come up with a clever concept design that makes charging a cell phone with solar as easy as possible, a solar-powered sticker phone. Just slap it onto a window and wait. Integrating solar cells into mobile phones is gaining popularity and designers are dashing towards the idea of charging up cell phones with the sun. While some green ideas will never fly, others are kind of creative, such as this one. When it comes to a simple phone idea, we think it holds potential.  Just a concept as of now, but who knows?

Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig recently performed on Broadway in the two-man drama, A Steady Rain. During the run, they helped bring in a record $1.5 million for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The annual competition, now in its 21st year, pits Broadway, Off-Broadway and National Tour companies against each other for six weeks to see who can bring in the most money for AIDS relief. The winners are proclaimed “The Gypsy of the Year.”

To bring in the funds, Jackman and Craig donated signed items and personal time with fans. Autographed posters went for $300 apiece; signed Playbills for $60 each. Jackman and Craig’s T-shirts, which were worn during the show, fetched anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000 nightly. Backstage photographs with any audience member willing to make a $2,000 donation to BC/EFA. There were as many as ten people a night posing with the stars. One performance alone brought in $64,850!
