Let’s file these under “good (and fun) to know”

Friday, February 26th, 2010

We know these aren’t about fighting for world issues or curing disease, but we think they’re fun and interesting and wanted to share…

The first couple to be shown in bed together on prime time TV was Fred and Wilma Flintstone.

It is impossible to lick your elbow.

The average cost of raising a medium-size dog to the age of eleven:  $ 16,400

If a statue in the park of a person on a horse has both front legs in the air, the person died in battle. If the horse has one front leg in the air, the person died because of wounds received in battle. If the horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died  of natural causes.

Oh, and at least 75% of people who read this will try to lick their elbow!  Wasn’t this fun?  More later…

Thirsty?

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

thirstycamelFeeling thirsty?  Soft-drinks may not be the answer.  A new study suggests that the sugar in soda may be linked to increasing the risk of pancreatic cancer.  These researchers tracked 60,524 participants in Singapore for over 14 years, and discovered that people who drank two or more sodas a week had an 87 percent increased risk of developing the cancer.  Scientists reason that the sugar in soda could boost the body’s insulin levels and spur cell cancer growth.

Snow in all 50 States? Climate Change?

Friday, February 12th, 2010

snowblogIf it snows in Hawaii, then all 50 states will have snow.  Is this a sign of climate change?  Global warming or, in this case, cooling?

People often wonder, does it snow in Hawaii? Yep, it does over 9,000 feet. Hawaii is also home to the Hawaii Ski Club where members get together and go skiing (and we don’t mean water skiing here).

The idea behind snow being in all 50 states in an interesting concept. Usually winters for the south are milder than other parts of the United States, but the weather has been fair to all in distributing snow.

Top New York City Restaurants Join “Help ♥ Haiti” Campaign

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Here’s one more great reason to have an “I’m Tired of Hunger” bracelet and a new fun way of getting one…

Some of the country’s finest restaurants are coming together for the Help ♥ Haiti campaign, an initiative that kicks off this Valentine’s Day at TOUCH nightclub to benefit survivors of the earthquake in Haiti. The campaign’s New York Lead Sponsor is The Tour de France Restaurant Group, comprised of Nice Matin, Marseille, Café D’Alsace, Le Monde, Pigalle, Maison, France L’Express, the uptown and downtown branches of French Roast, as well as a growing list of participants.

From February 15th through the 28th, whenever a guest orders a meal at one of the participating restaurants while wearing an I’m Tired of Hunger bracelet, the restaurant will donate $2.40, the cost of one day’s supply of Ready-to-Use Foods for an acutely malnourished child, to Action Against Hunger | ACF-International.

I’m Tired of Hunger” bracelets will be distributed during the Help ♥ Haiti kick-off event at TOUCH nightclub on Valentine’s Day.  Even if you don’t live in New York or can’t attend the event, you can still help by buying the bracelet online, here on the website.  Maybe you have friends or relatives in New York?

Help ♥ Haiti campaign sponsors include TOUCH nightclub, Ultimat Vodka, Vitella’s Cucina, Captivate Network, and TimeOut New York, along with The Tour de France Restaurant Group.

Action Against Hunger mobilized an emergency response immediately following the earthquake in Haiti. The organization is delivering emergency services in nutrition, sanitation and hygiene and providing clean water for survivors in Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas. Action Against Hunger has assisted thousands of people left homeless and in dire need of life-sustaining supplies over the last three weeks.

Vitamin D May Reduce the Risk of Colon Cancer

Friday, February 5th, 2010

vitamin-dEuropean researchers have found that a lack in circulating vitamin D may be correlated to a greater risk of colorectal cancer. Their study showed that people in the top fifth of vitamin D levels had a 40 percent lower risk for this disease, although more research is needed to conclude that increase in this vitamin can effectively reduce the risk for this cancer.

If more research can support these findings, vitamin D may play a role in controlling cancer by modulating cell growth and death by reducing the development of blood vessels to support tumor tissue.

Back to School for the Children of Haiti

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

haitischool5,000 to 8,000 schools were affected by the earthquake in Haiti. In Port-Au-Prince, 90 to 97% of the schools were destroyed, as most of the schools were built with cement blocks to withstand hurricanes, not using anti-seismic systems in the case of an earthquake. The entire national school system — already among the poorest in the world — had been shut down, although schools in much of the country were not directly affected.

In attempt to restore some type of order to children’s lives, schools opened yesterday for the first time since the quake, even though it could be a month or longer before pupils in the quake zone resume their studies. Due to this reopening, many classrooms were fuller than usual because of children relocating.

Clinics run by Doctors without Borders report that the psychological impact of the disaster is becoming more apparent- especially in the symptoms of children, which could be helped by restoring a familiar type of order into the children’s lives and giving them something other than the devastation to think about.

The country is still in need of almost every form of aid- including food, clean water, cash, and even lightweight trucks.
