Let’s file these under “good (and fun) to know”

Friday, February 26th, 2010

We know these aren’t about fighting for world issues or curing disease, but we think they’re fun and interesting and wanted to share…

The first couple to be shown in bed together on prime time TV was Fred and Wilma Flintstone.

It is impossible to lick your elbow.

The average cost of raising a medium-size dog to the age of eleven:  $ 16,400

If a statue in the park of a person on a horse has both front legs in the air, the person died in battle. If the horse has one front leg in the air, the person died because of wounds received in battle. If the horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died  of natural causes.

Oh, and at least 75% of people who read this will try to lick their elbow!  Wasn’t this fun?  More later…

Swedes Put First Carbon Labels on Food

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

swedish-carbon-label

When Swedes examine the packaging of their food products, they’re going to see more than nutritional information–now there’s going to be a ‘carbon label’ right next to it. The labels read ‘Climate declared: X kg CO2 per kg of product,” so people will know just how much greenhouse gas their food is contributing to climate change.

According to the New York Times, it’s part of an experiment being pioneered by the Swedish government’s Nutrition Department:

New labels listing the carbon dioxide emissions associated with the production of foods, from whole wheat pasta to fast food burgers, are appearing on some grocery items and restaurant menus around the country.

If successful, the practice could be adopted nationwide. It’s part of the Swede’s shifting attitude that climate and health should be given equal weight, as well as environmental and nutritional issues. There are recent precedents for such an idea–the Global Warming Diet used such a label as a satirical conceit to try to get people to pay attention to the carbon footprint of the food and products they buy. Looks like the Swedes may have taken them seriously.

This idea is indeed gaining traction here in the US, as well–consider the Wal-Mart Sustainability Index, which will include carbon footprint as a primary criterion in the products it rates. And these sustainability ratings will be seen by anyone who strolls through the retail giant’s stores. And this is being done privately, as opposed to the Swedes’ governmental initiative.

Either way, the phenomenon is undeniable–climate change is already beginning to change the very way we shop and eat.

Now these are some pussy cats…

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

We had to share these wonderful photos we were sent from In-Sync Exotics, a large cat rescue organization in Wylie, Texas. They currently have more than 40 lions, tigers (no bears, oh my), cougars, leopards and more… We are strongly considering creating a bracelet for them. We’re just trying to figure out what it would say: I’m Tired of ___________?

The are more captive tigers in Texas than wild ones in the rest of the world

Stay away!! It's my pumpkin!

PETA Strikes Again!

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

peta-whalesYou can always count on PETA to entertain us and no one is better at getting great press by creating controversy. Here’s another perfect example brought to us by Zelda Lily.

Surprise, surprise. PETA - whose previous nude babe campaigns have shown that they have more of an interest in saving animals rather than promoting gender equality for humans - have really outdone themselves with their latest campaign. A billboard placed in Jacksonville, Florida reads “Save the Whales. Lose the Blubber: Go Vegetarian” next to a drawing of an overweight woman in a bikini. This campaign has really nailed two of the advertising industry’s favorite prescriptions for lazy concepts: puns and sexism. And let’s not even get into the fact that “save the whales” is completely the opposite of PETA’s supposed “lose weight” message. I guess when PETA’s founder and president Ingrid Newkirk isn’t penning books about throwing pointless parties for puppies, she is inspiring her team to come up with genius ad campaigns. A thousand One Shows for PETA, please!

The billboard has already been appropriately labeled as “fat-shaming” but let’s not ignore the sexism in the campaign. Women are overly concerned with their body-image (as they should be, PETA is saying) and the only way they would take a cause like vegetarianism on is if they were told that it would help them lose weight. Considering that PETA is notorious for putting nude, skinny, pretty and often silicone-enhanced female celebrities in their ads it is plainly obvious that they are not only riding on a the wave of an unrealistic and unhealthy body image for women, but they are promoting it. Why do the women in PETA’s ads have to be nude and often accompanied by sexually provocative puns in the ad copy? What does being naked and sexual have to do with a vegetarian lifestyle? PETA is famous for using women’s sexualized bodies as a way to promote animal rights. And how committed to animal rights could an organization be if they just want to attract people who are interested in mimicking famous porn stars or are only interested in losing weight? Vegetarianism and veganism is more than fad diets, they are complete lifestyles that require a lot of dedication. Considering that most people don’t stick to diets (or at least that is what I guess by seeing all the fad diet books and tips there are out there) you would think that PETA wouldn’t even bother marketing to the people to whom fad diets would be appealing.

But, again, I guess actually promoting animal rights instead of promoting celebrities and an unhealthy body image for women isn’t really what PETA is all about. So go ahead with your idiotic and tired PR stunts, PETA, while you alienate the non-celebrities who would have considered joining your organization! We will all just stay back here and eat a steak in your honor.

I’m Tired of… Flying!

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

There are so many things I’m Tired of…, a lot of them serious issues, like all of the important causes we support, but some of them are just annoying things that stick in my “craw” — like, take for example, the wonderful world of flying!

So, especially with summer travel upon us, I decided to dedicate my Huffington Post story for this week to exactly that and wrote a piece called, “I’m Tired of… Flying.”

flying_1As the article begins, “I’m tired of arriving at the airport two to three hours ahead of my flight. I’m tired of long grueling security lines. I’m tired of walking through scanners barefoot and beltless. I’m tired of paying for baggage, soft drinks and food… I’m tired of flying from beginning to end! What’s next… coin operated airplane bathrooms?”

I had so much fun writing it, that I might have to continue to write about more and more things we’re all tired of!

Any suggestions for me? Click here to read the story.

The Ugly Truth about Pit Bulls

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Warning: This video was sent to us by an anonymous source and is very graphic. It clearly demonstrates the risk level we face, when we consider a Pit Bull for a pet.

Sorry, but this all too common footage of Pit Bulls needs to be shown. You might also want to turn up the volume. Please share your thoughts afterward.

Cow Burps? A Major Contributor to Global Warming?

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

cowfaceOne contributor to global warming - bigger than coal mines, landfills and sewage treatment plants - is being left out of efforts by the Obama administration and House Democrats to limit greenhouse gas emissions.Cow burps.

Belching from the nation’s 170 million cattle, sheep and pigs produces about one-quarter of the methane released in the United States each year, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. That makes the hoofed critters the largest source of the heat-trapping gas.

In part because of an adept farm lobby campaign that equates government regulation with a cow tax, the gas from farm animals is exempt from legislation being considered by Congress to limit greenhouse gas emissions.

The EPA under President Barack Obama has said it has no plans to regulate the gas, even though the agency recently included methane among six greenhouse gases it thinks are endangering human health and welfare.
