Snow in all 50 States? Climate Change?

Friday, February 12th, 2010

snowblogIf it snows in Hawaii, then all 50 states will have snow.  Is this a sign of climate change?  Global warming or, in this case, cooling?

People often wonder, does it snow in Hawaii? Yep, it does over 9,000 feet. Hawaii is also home to the Hawaii Ski Club where members get together and go skiing (and we don’t mean water skiing here).

The idea behind snow being in all 50 states in an interesting concept. Usually winters for the south are milder than other parts of the United States, but the weather has been fair to all in distributing snow.

Could Solar Powered Cell Phones be in the Near Future?

Friday, December 18th, 2009

ecofone

Designer Liu Hsiang-Ling has come up with a clever concept design that makes charging a cell phone with solar as easy as possible, a solar-powered sticker phone. Just slap it onto a window and wait. Integrating solar cells into mobile phones is gaining popularity and designers are dashing towards the idea of charging up cell phones with the sun. While some green ideas will never fly, others are kind of creative, such as this one. When it comes to a simple phone idea, we think it holds potential.  Just a concept as of now, but who knows?

Is Algae the Food of the Gods?

Monday, November 30th, 2009

algaeOn paper, it very well could be. Industry evangelists predict a bright future in which algae farms produce the equivalent of the entire amount of petroleum the United States’ currently uses in a year. Even better: Algae could potentially do this using just one percent of the country’s land mass and might actually remove carbon from the atmosphere in the process.

Sounds great, but there are some problems.

Many analysts have serious doubts about algae’s ability to produce fuel at scale. The young industry has had trouble developing a systematized process for producing the fuel and, so far, no company has been able to convert the fast-growing plants to something you could put in your tank for anything less than $8 per gallon.

Despite this, many people are holding out for a slimy green future powered by agitated pond scum.

Swedes Put First Carbon Labels on Food

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

swedish-carbon-label

When Swedes examine the packaging of their food products, they’re going to see more than nutritional information–now there’s going to be a ‘carbon label’ right next to it. The labels read ‘Climate declared: X kg CO2 per kg of product,” so people will know just how much greenhouse gas their food is contributing to climate change.

According to the New York Times, it’s part of an experiment being pioneered by the Swedish government’s Nutrition Department:

New labels listing the carbon dioxide emissions associated with the production of foods, from whole wheat pasta to fast food burgers, are appearing on some grocery items and restaurant menus around the country.

If successful, the practice could be adopted nationwide. It’s part of the Swede’s shifting attitude that climate and health should be given equal weight, as well as environmental and nutritional issues. There are recent precedents for such an idea–the Global Warming Diet used such a label as a satirical conceit to try to get people to pay attention to the carbon footprint of the food and products they buy. Looks like the Swedes may have taken them seriously.

This idea is indeed gaining traction here in the US, as well–consider the Wal-Mart Sustainability Index, which will include carbon footprint as a primary criterion in the products it rates. And these sustainability ratings will be seen by anyone who strolls through the retail giant’s stores. And this is being done privately, as opposed to the Swedes’ governmental initiative.

Either way, the phenomenon is undeniable–climate change is already beginning to change the very way we shop and eat.

In an effort to remind you that the new 2010 Prius was created from the loins of Mother Nature herself, Toyota is rolling out an unusual, but highly effective form of brand advertising: giant killer solar-powered flowers that can charge your laptop and give you free WiFi.

According to the company, these blood-thirsty high-tech Daisys represent the Prius theme of “Harmony between Man, Nature, and Machine.” Boston is the first to witness the invasion promotion followed soon by New York, Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.
