Top New York City Restaurants Join “Help ♥ Haiti” Campaign

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Here’s one more great reason to have an “I’m Tired of Hunger” bracelet and a new fun way of getting one…

Some of the country’s finest restaurants are coming together for the Help ♥ Haiti campaign, an initiative that kicks off this Valentine’s Day at TOUCH nightclub to benefit survivors of the earthquake in Haiti. The campaign’s New York Lead Sponsor is The Tour de France Restaurant Group, comprised of Nice Matin, Marseille, Café D’Alsace, Le Monde, Pigalle, Maison, France L’Express, the uptown and downtown branches of French Roast, as well as a growing list of participants.

From February 15th through the 28th, whenever a guest orders a meal at one of the participating restaurants while wearing an I’m Tired of Hunger bracelet, the restaurant will donate $2.40, the cost of one day’s supply of Ready-to-Use Foods for an acutely malnourished child, to Action Against Hunger | ACF-International.

I’m Tired of Hunger” bracelets will be distributed during the Help ♥ Haiti kick-off event at TOUCH nightclub on Valentine’s Day.  Even if you don’t live in New York or can’t attend the event, you can still help by buying the bracelet online, here on the website.  Maybe you have friends or relatives in New York?

Help ♥ Haiti campaign sponsors include TOUCH nightclub, Ultimat Vodka, Vitella’s Cucina, Captivate Network, and TimeOut New York, along with The Tour de France Restaurant Group.

Action Against Hunger mobilized an emergency response immediately following the earthquake in Haiti. The organization is delivering emergency services in nutrition, sanitation and hygiene and providing clean water for survivors in Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas. Action Against Hunger has assisted thousands of people left homeless and in dire need of life-sustaining supplies over the last three weeks.

These are Difficult Times for Non Profits

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Here’s an example of the unfortunate fallout from these difficult economic times. This is the last thing we should allow to happen…

Planned layoffs are now under way at Heifer International, according to a company spokesman.

Heifer spokesperson Tina Hall confirmed that the first round of layoffs have begun and will continue on. Heifer announced earlier this year that layoffs were forthcoming and would be implemented by the end of June.

Hall said the layoffs would affect about 20 percent of Heifer’s U.S. work force of about 330 employees and that specifics concerning the Heifer locations affected by the layoffs would be released soon.

Based in Little Rock, Heifer is a nonprofit organization dedicated to eradicating world hunger and poverty.

In these difficult economic times, charities are struggling more than ever to make ends meet and continue to do their critically important work to rid the world of disease, hunger, discrimination, animal cruelty and address other important issues we face. We just don’t have the extra cash to write the nice checks. Our bracelet campaign has helped make a difference, because it allows thousands and thousands of people to make just a small purchase and together, make a big difference!

World’s Hungry Will Reach Record 1 Billion This Year

Monday, May 18th, 2009

The number of hungry people in the world will increase to a record 1 billion this year, the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization said. The total will advance by 104 million people in 2009, Jacques Diouf, director general of the Rome-based FAO, told reporters in Paris. Prices of wheat, rice and corn rose to records last year, sparking riots from Haiti to Ivory Coast.

“We have never seen so many hungry people in the world,” Diouf said.

World food prices rose in April, led by gains in oils, fats and sugar, the FAO said today. Its index of 55 foods was at 143 points last month, compared with 140 in March and 214 in June, the group said today in a report on its Web site.

U.S. can lead effort to end world hunger

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

This is a great piece written by former US Senator, George McGovern and Tony Hall about the world hunger crisis. It’s definitely worth a read.

Over the past four decades, the global community has made considerable progress in the fight against hunger. Thanks in no small part to U.S. foreign assistance and the generosity of American citizens, the percentage of chronically hungry people declined from 37 percent of the world’s population in the 1960s to about 13 percent today.

Tragically, the twin catastrophes of the global food and financial crises are eroding this progress. Upward of 115 million more people in the past year have been pushed into a life of desperate, chronic hunger. That means 963 million people around the world are now going hungry everyday - the highest number ever. And this toll is expected to rise. Read more…

* CARE — Provides food, water, sanitation and health care for 1.5 million people in the western Darfur region, neighboring Chad and North and South Kordofan.

* INTERNATIONAL RESCUE COMMITTEE — Helps 650,000 people in Darfur with medical care, water, sanitation and education. Also assists 1.1 million people in North and East Sudan.

* MERCY CORPS — Helps 200,000 people living in Darfur displacement camps.

* OXFAM — Provides aid, including clean water, to 600,000 people across Darfur, in Khartoum state and eastern Sudan. Read more…
