PETA’s Bloody ‘Unhappy Meals’ Making Parents Angry

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

We understand PETA’s mission, but sometimes their tactics just go too far…

mcdonalds PETA and McDonald’s have long been arch-nemeses, but after a long period of relative calm, the animal rights group has ratcheted up the rhetoric recently. Its tactic: Passing out “Unhappy Meals,” which include a rubber chicken stained with fake blood, a small paper cutout showing Ronald McDonald wielding a bloody knife and a T-shirt bearing the logo “McCruelty.”

Needless to say, not everyone is pleased with the approach. At a McDonald’s restaurant in Albany, N.Y., some parents fumed when confronted with PETA’s message. “I don’t want my son to be around something like this,” one mother, who’d brought her son to eat lunch at the fast-food chain, told Albany’s Fox 23 News. “This is not fair for a child.”

But PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman doesn’t seem terribly concerned about the criticism. “If kids knew how unhappy the chickens who are killed for Happy Meals really are, they’d lose their lunch,” Reiman said in a statement. “And if parents don’t want them to know, then the decent thing to do is to refuse to take them to eat [at McDonald's].”

The issue at the heart of PETA’s complaint is the method by which chickens are killed to produce McDonald’s menu items such as Chicken McNuggets. Read more…

A Touching Story about Bouchard, One of our SMILE2 Winners

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

The rescue organization, who submitted Bouchard for our SMILE2 contest, posted this on their blog and we wanted to share it:

We entered a Bouchard smiling picture to the “I’m Tired of Animal Cruelty” organization. They sent us an email today, and Bouchard’s picture was one of the selected ones in their youtube video.

This is what Bouchard looked like bouchard_1the day I rescued him from a shelter in central Florida the week of Thanksgiving in 2003. I wasn’t expecting this. No one at the shelter mentioned how emaciated he was, and the Dobie rescue transport volunteer who picked him up even asked, “Are you sure this is the right dog?”

Can you believe it? The shelter neutered him ibouchardn this condition. After all he went through, I cannot believe he made it through that. When I got him, there were physical issues that took some time to get through, and once that was taken care of, he had some personality conflicts that we also had to work through. He was rejected by two homes after a live-in period didn’t work out.

The second adoptive home I left him at, well, as the front door shut, I heard him body slam himself against it. That was hard to walk away from. But he has a bit of piss and vinegar in him, so it didn’t take long for him to be returned. He has made a fine place for himself at Fort Doberdale, is a special case and always has a place in my heart. Read more…

Matchmaker to the Dogs

Monday, July 20th, 2009

dogtime_logoHere’s a very cool website we discovered in our animal rights travels. Called Dogtime, it’s a great place for anything and everything to do with dogs — a search engine that shows you adoptable dogs and local pet businesses in your area and a virtual cornucopia of information, articles and tips on all things dogs. You can learn everything you need to know from the Dogtime experts about specific breeds, training techniques, including quizes to guage how you’re doing and pet insurance. There are special offers, videos, a forum and so much more. One of our favorite parts, though is the online matchmaking questionnaire that then matches you with your perfect type of dog.

We find this website to be very comprehensive with great information and services, not to mention that it’s well done, appealing and easy to navigate. And, we’re told they’ve got big plans for more great doggy info and services to come! Check them out at www.dogtime.com.

Hello, My Name is PJ and I have Diabetes. What?

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

pj2-250Hello! My name is PJ Foster and I am 6 years old. I was diagnosed with diabetes when I was only 8 weeks old. My owners at that time were not prepared to provide me with the necessary medical care, so they turned me over to a veterinary clinic in a small Missouri town. That is where I met my current owner, Ashley. She adopted me and we have been best friends ever since! Every day she gives me two insulin injections, one in the morning and one at night with my food. I lived in Missouri with her for four years while she was in veterinary school.

Through the University of Missouri - College of Veterinary Medicine PALS (Pet Assisted Love and Support) program, I was able to become Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certified. After I passed the CGC test, Ashley and I visited nursing homes and hospitals to cheer up people who are sick or need extra living assistance. In August of 2008 we moved to Florida where Ashley took a job as an emergency veterinarian. I get to go to work with her every day!

When we are not at work, I love to play with all of my toys and run on the beach. I am also a big fan of taking naps and watching Ashley cook in the kitchen. I am so very happy to be here and excited to meet all of you!

HSUS Can Now Grant Bachelor’s Degrees In Animal Studies

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

hsus_univeristy

Earlier this month, the Humane Society of the United States received a higher education license to grant bachelor’s degrees in animal protection. In Washington, D.C., and on the Internet, the animal rights organization will qualify graduates to work for the more than 17,000 nonprofit organizations nationwide that research, protect, provide services or advocate for animals.

According to the Cleveland Metro, HSU will begin offering undergraduate degrees and graduate certificates in animal studies, policy, advocacy and humane leadership in the fall. The faculty includes 20 instructors with doctoral degrees in animal behavior, policy, psychology, sociology, literature, veterinary medicine, law and other fields.

For those looking to jump at this opportunity, there is one snag: Applicants must have “at least 60 college credits at the freshman and sophomore levels. HSU curriculum provides the final two years of undergraduate study in an eight-week semester.”

This could be an incredible opportunity for anyone looking to focus on getting involved in animal rights. What better way to help animal non-profits all over the country than to receive an education from one of the largest in the world?

For more info, check out HumaneSocietyUniversity.org (We imagine this will shift to a .edu shortly…)

California Budget Plan May Increase Animal Euthanasia

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

animal-crueltySACRAMENTO, CA - Animals in many California shelters may soon have only three days before they can be adopted out or euthanized under a budget proposal by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Under the 1997 Hayden bill, shelters that receive funds from the state must keep animals six days before they face the possibility of being euthanized.

“We’re going to give pounds the ability to do it in three days, four days, five days, six days, whatever they see as the best way to do it,” said Governor’s spokesman Aaron McLear, who added the proposal would save nearly $25 million and give local shelters more discretion.

An outcry by pet owners derailed the plan when the Governor proposed it once before. And some hope they can do it again. “Dogs are like your kids, and so it was hard when he was missing and to have him put down or given to somebody else, that would just be devastating,” said Sue Paulson, who recently lost her dog.

Some shelters expect to have the resources to continue to keep animals for the current six day standard. But others would likely make adjustments. “Certainly, there are other counties in the state that are faced with much harsher economic realities, so it would mean more animals would be put down in those areas,” said Rebecca Katz with San Francisco Animal Care and Control.

At the Sacramento Animal Shelter, Cynthia Brown stood anxiously outside, hoping her lost dog would turn up. “I’m very nervous and kind of in shock as it is, because I can’t find him and he doesn’t have his collar on. He’s been micro-chipped, but things happen,” Brown said. She said she couldn’t imagine having just three days before her missing animal might be euthanized.

Other pet owners say they worry that if they went on vacation and a pet got out, it might be adopted or euthanized before they returned. “You don’t wanna have that kind of pressure when you’re looking for a member of your family,” said Brown, who added that micro-chipping pets to identify them would become even more important if the measure passes in the next budget.

Is this animal cruelty? Help us end this kind of treatment!

Pet Airline Takes to the Sky

Friday, May 15th, 2009

pet_airwaysThe first pet-only airline, specifically designed for the “safe and comfortable transportation of pets. will take to the skies July 14th. Pet Airways will depart from Teterboro, a small airport outside New York, en route to Washington, Chicago, Denver and Los Angeles.

“Seats” on a modified Beechcraft 1900, supplied under contract with Suburban Air, will cost 149 dollars each way. Approximately 50 “pawsengers” can be booked on each flight and will travel in the comfort of their kennels, stacked on custom-made shelves. Seats are removed to make way for pet carriers.

It’s estimated that 76 million cats and dogs travel each year in the United States, including two million in airplanes. And air travel is no easy ride for domestic creatures. Each year, some 5,000 animals suffer injury while being transported, according to animal rights experts.

Once you’ve decided that you’ll be jet setting with your pet, you’ll want to research different airlines to find out how they handle pet travel, including any special restrictions and requirements. Read more…
