Police Shoot and Kill Two Staffordshire Bull Terriers

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

staffordshire bull terriers

These kinds of stories are so unpleasant and unfortunate, but we have to share them so more people become aware of what’s going on…

Sunday morning wasn’t the first time that Keith Outlaw’s two Staffordshire bull terriers had escaped from their Wyandanch yard. But this time, the dogs didn’t come back.

As Outlaw and his 15-year-old daughter drove through the neighborhood looking for them, Outlaw said he heard gunshots. It turned out to be Suffolk police, who had just shot and killed both animals.

Outlaw, 52, said he knows the dogs shouldn’t have escaped from his yard, but he said 3-year-old Onyx and Dutchess, who was a year and a half, were gentle giants who never hurt anyone.

Police painted a different picture.

A police representative said officers who were driving through the Wyandanch neighborhood saw the two animals, which look like pit bulls, chasing a group of children as young as 5. The children got away, and the officers cornered the dogs in a fenced yard on 19th Street, the representative said.

They closed the gate, trapping the dogs inside, and called animal control officers. But as they waited for animal control, the homeowner — an elderly deaf man — stepped out of his house.

“The officers were yelling at him to go back in the house, but he couldn’t hear them because he was deaf,” the representative said.

When the dogs charged at the man, the representative said, the officers shot and killed both dogs.

The representative did not know how many bullets were fired, nor how many officers did the shooting, and could not provide information about departmental policy in such situations.

The resident of the 19th Street home could not be reached for comment.

After the shooting, Outlaw said he walked up to the police and asked whether they had seen his dogs.

“I said, ‘Did you see two brown dogs? Please tell me you guys didn’t just shoot my dogs,’ ” Outlaw said. Then he saw the dogs’ bodies — one in the bushes, the other on the side of the house.

“They never fight,” he said. “These dogs have never been in a scrap with another dog.”

Outlaw said he is grateful that at least he is left with the pair’s nine puppies, which are just old enough to have been weaned.

Controversy over dog attending class with an autistic boy

Monday, August 31st, 2009

CHICAGO - Kaleb Drew went to first grade on Tuesday tethered to his Labrador retriever, over the school’s objections, but his family is optimistic they’ll win a court battle to keep the dog in class.

Chewey the Lab, trained to help the autistic boy deal with his disabilities, did “just as he’s supposed to” in keeping Kaleb safe and calm during his first full day back at school, said the boy’s mom, Nichelle Drew.

A Douglas County judge allowed the dog to accompany Kaleb until the family’s lawsuit against Villa Grove Elementary School in east-central Illinois goes to trial in November.

Kaleb’s case and a separate lawsuit involving an autistic boy near St. Louis are the first challenges to an Illinois law allowing service animals in schools, according to an attorney for the Villa Grove school and a spokeswoman for the Illinois Board of Education.

“I hope as time goes by that maybe they’ll see that it’s not causing a problem, and they’ll let the fight go,” Nichelle Drew said. Regardless, she added, “We’re in it for the long haul.”

Officials at both schools maintain that the dogs aren’t true “service” animals and provide only comfort care. They say the autistic boys’ needs have to be balanced against other children who have allergies or fear the dogs. Read more…

Hello, My Name is PJ and I have Diabetes. What?

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

pj2-250Hello! My name is PJ Foster and I am 6 years old. I was diagnosed with diabetes when I was only 8 weeks old. My owners at that time were not prepared to provide me with the necessary medical care, so they turned me over to a veterinary clinic in a small Missouri town. That is where I met my current owner, Ashley. She adopted me and we have been best friends ever since! Every day she gives me two insulin injections, one in the morning and one at night with my food. I lived in Missouri with her for four years while she was in veterinary school.

Through the University of Missouri - College of Veterinary Medicine PALS (Pet Assisted Love and Support) program, I was able to become Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certified. After I passed the CGC test, Ashley and I visited nursing homes and hospitals to cheer up people who are sick or need extra living assistance. In August of 2008 we moved to Florida where Ashley took a job as an emergency veterinarian. I get to go to work with her every day!

When we are not at work, I love to play with all of my toys and run on the beach. I am also a big fan of taking naps and watching Ashley cook in the kitchen. I am so very happy to be here and excited to meet all of you!

California Budget Plan May Increase Animal Euthanasia

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

animal-crueltySACRAMENTO, CA - Animals in many California shelters may soon have only three days before they can be adopted out or euthanized under a budget proposal by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Under the 1997 Hayden bill, shelters that receive funds from the state must keep animals six days before they face the possibility of being euthanized.

“We’re going to give pounds the ability to do it in three days, four days, five days, six days, whatever they see as the best way to do it,” said Governor’s spokesman Aaron McLear, who added the proposal would save nearly $25 million and give local shelters more discretion.

An outcry by pet owners derailed the plan when the Governor proposed it once before. And some hope they can do it again. “Dogs are like your kids, and so it was hard when he was missing and to have him put down or given to somebody else, that would just be devastating,” said Sue Paulson, who recently lost her dog.

Some shelters expect to have the resources to continue to keep animals for the current six day standard. But others would likely make adjustments. “Certainly, there are other counties in the state that are faced with much harsher economic realities, so it would mean more animals would be put down in those areas,” said Rebecca Katz with San Francisco Animal Care and Control.

At the Sacramento Animal Shelter, Cynthia Brown stood anxiously outside, hoping her lost dog would turn up. “I’m very nervous and kind of in shock as it is, because I can’t find him and he doesn’t have his collar on. He’s been micro-chipped, but things happen,” Brown said. She said she couldn’t imagine having just three days before her missing animal might be euthanized.

Other pet owners say they worry that if they went on vacation and a pet got out, it might be adopted or euthanized before they returned. “You don’t wanna have that kind of pressure when you’re looking for a member of your family,” said Brown, who added that micro-chipping pets to identify them would become even more important if the measure passes in the next budget.

Is this animal cruelty? Help us end this kind of treatment!

AKC and dog owners win breed ban ruling in Denver

Monday, June 8th, 2009

stop_bsl-copyAKC and dog owners win a ruling granting a trial to challenge the constitutionality of the Denver breed ban.

New York, NY- The American Kennel Club® is pleased to announce that United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit has ruled in favor of plaintiffs Sonya Dias, Hillary Engel, and Sheryl White in their appeal challenging the constitutionality of the Denver breed ban or breed specific legislation (BSL). This ruling reverses the United States District Court of Colorado’s 2007 dismissal of the suit.

The Denver ordinance bans ownership or possession of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Bull Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier and/or any dog with a majority of physical traits of one or more of these breeds within the City and County of Denver. Since 2005, as a result of this ordinance, more than 1,000 dogs within the city limits have been euthanized.

In July 2008, the AKC® joined Karen R. Breslin of the Progressive Law Center, LLC of Lakewood, Colorado, and retained the Washington D.C. office of Kaye Scholer LLP to represent dog-owning plaintiffs Dias, Engel and White in their appeal in which they asserted that the Denver ordinance banning pit bulls within the city limits is unconstitutional.

The original lawsuit stated the owners were forced to move out of Denver with their dogs because of the ban which they asserted was a violation of, among other things, their constitutional rights.

“The AKC has always opposed breed bans on the basis that there are no bad dogs, just bad owners. We support reasonable, enforceable, non-discriminatory laws to govern the ownership of dogs,” said Margaret Poindexter, General Counsel for the AKC. “We also have serious concerns about AKC breed standards being used by law enforcement to identify dangerous dogs. Breed standards are intended to serve as the written ideal of a dog which breeders can aspire to, not a benchmark for defining dangerous dogs.”

In fact, the Tenth Circuit Court’s decision quotes the AKC breed standard for the Staffordshire Bull Terrier: “with its affections for its friends, and children in particular, its off-duty quietness and trustworthy stability, [the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a foremost all-purpose dog.”

The AKC supports laws that: establish a fair process by which specific dogs are identified as “dangerous” based on stated, measurable actions; impose appropriate penalties on irresponsible owners; and establish a well-defined method for dealing with dogs proven to be dangerous. If necessary, dogs proven to be “dangerous” may need to be humanely destroyed but the AKC strongly opposes any legislation that determines a dog to be “dangerous” based on specific breeds or phenotypic classes of dogs.

Dog saved from certain death pays it forward

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

We just love animal stories like this! Doggies Rule!!!

blewettPLAIN, Chelan County - Blewett, a dog rescued in March at Blewett Pass, has become a rescue dog.

Dozens of people tried to rescue the black Lab this winter after he was seen huddling in the snow at the top of Blewett Pass for a week. Wary of strangers, the dog accepted food and was finally captured and adopted into a home. Jay and Janie Smith of Plain adopted Blewett from the Wenatchee Valley Humane Society animal shelter in March.

Monday, Blewett returned the favor and helped rescue another imperiled black Lab.

Jay Smith said his wife was walking Blewett on a trail high above the Wenatchee River when Blewett started barking and raced down the steep bank to sniff out another animal close to the river’s edge.

“My wife thought it was a dead bear,” Jay Smith said. Janie Smith called Blewett back up and they went home so she could get a pair of binoculars. With the binoculars, she could see it was a large black dog, and it was alive.

Jay Smith called Chelan County Fire District 9 and returned with a firefighter and a friend to try to reach the dog, using ropes to climb down to the river.

Blewett again ran down and stayed with the dog while the dog was rescued Monday evening. The dog was weak, old and arthritic, but otherwise uninjured. Information on his red collar led to a Plain neighbor, Carol Hurt.

“The whole thing is a miracle,” said Hurt, who explained the 11-year-old dog, Pepper, had been lost since May 23. “One big, black, lost dog found the other big, black, lost dog. It’s pretty heartwarming.”

Pepper belongs to Hurt’s daughter, Susan Cox of Wenatchee, but was staying with Hurt over the weekend when he went missing. Cox and her husband, Mike, searched for Pepper, but had no luck. They now believe the dog was swept away by the river while taking a drink about a half-mile from Hurt’s house.

Monday night, Cox told the story to her best friend, Tracy Peterson, a second-grade teacher at Newbery Elementary School. Peterson relayed the story to her class and had them write an account of Blewett’s rescue of Pepper. Students depicted Blewett as a wonder dog who would bark and bark until his lungs were empty to get help. Peterson plans to compile the stories into a book to give to Cox.

“We’re happy beyond belief,” Cox said about the return of her dog. “And that Blewett, he’s quite the hero.”
